Oct. 1, 2002 - In September, Hyundai Motor has sold 58,588 units in domestic market – down 15.1 percent from the previous month and down 13.7 percent from September 2001. Export shipments also were down 9.5 percent from the previous month and down 0.3 percent from September 2001 with the total sales of 78,971.

The overall total domestic sales of 582,568 until the end of September were up 7.7 percent compared with the same period of the last year when 541,027 vehicles. Exports showed increase of 2 percent with shipments of 681,751 compared to 668,606 of the last year.

Holiday closure
September figures also showed a slight drop in domestic and export shipments due to Hyundai’s plants closing five days for the Korean Thanksgiving, “Choosuk” holiday, resulting in a lack of vehicles for the Korean market as well as the prioritization of production for export sales.

Small Passenger vehicle up
Korea’s best small segment leader, Elantra, sold 7,855 units showing an increase 32.4 percent compared to last month’s 5,935. Elantra is the best selling model in Korea within the segment. Newly launched Click and new Verna each sold 2,336 units and 1,834 units, to maintain the market leader status with 58.5 percent share in its segment in September. In addition, Elantra, Sonata, XG, Equus, and Santa Fe each have backorders of 14,000 units, 10,000 units, 12,000 units, 5,500 units and 10,000 units respectively. These large amounts of backorders are due to booming export demand and brisk domestic sales.

Commercial vehicles a slight down
Commercial vehicles including small to large trucks and buses showed a slight decrease by 7 percent, with 19,177 vehicles sold September compared to 20,689 in August. For the year to date, commercial vehicles sold 182,778 units five percent up from 175,414 the same period of last year.
