May 19, 2010 - Team Hyundai Rallye hit the gravel at Coffs Harbour last weekend in the first Hyundai factory backed entrant in the modern Australian Rally Championship. The i30 CRDi turbo diesel, driven by Mick Gillett with Harvey Smith navigating has brought the team home with a swag of awards from the event finishing with first in the ‘Showroom Class’, first in the ‘Eco-Challenge’ and first in the ‘Two-Wheel Drive Championship’, and a highly credible top ten outright.
Driver Mick Gillett was beaming with pride “We’re so pleased with how the car has performed over the weekend. It has proven itself to be strong and reliable, and has brought us home with this fantastic result for the team and our sponsors Hyundai Genuine Parts and Accessories.”
The Coffs Harbour roads proved challenging for many of the competitors over the weekend, but not the i30, which powered through the stages needing only tyre checks at each service. Technicians from the Sinclair Hyundai Penrith, and Coffs Harbour Hyundai dealerships joined the team support crew for the event, having achieved outstanding results in recent Hyundai Motor Company Australia technician training assessments.
“These events are a fantastic way for our professional team of Hyundai technicians to get a taste of the i30 at its limits, gain valuable competition experience and really test their techniques under pressure.” said Phil Dingle, Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Regional General Manager.
Adding to the cars reliability, the i30 CRDi turbo diesel proved to be a true performer in the fuel economy stakes. “To be able to drive a car at full throttle for most of the weekend, and for it to be so conservative on the fuel is fantastic. The fuel economy of the i30 CRDi was way ahead of the field,” stated co-driver, and chief engineer Harvey Smith. “The i30 CRDi proved it is possible to be both fuel efficient and competitive, whilst again demonstrating its credibility and reliability.”
The i30 has performed consistently throughout the rally, the engineering and technical team only has minimal work to do in preparation for the next rally in South Australia. “We really only have to dust the car off and do some minor servicing before we leave for the next event.” said driver, Gillett.
The next Australian Rally Championship event takes place in the Mount Crawford region of South Australia from 25 – 27 June and will see the i30 CRDi turbo diesel out to gain some more valuable championship points.
